Paul & Dionne are both running the Edinburgh Marathon again this year,
having both completed the course last year in that monstrous heat. At that point
we both vowed never again!!
But the lure
of coming back to such a fabulous place as Edinburgh (we both live in southern
England) was too great and we signed up almost immediately when entries opened
for this year's race.
Paul has raised funds in each of the past two years (raising £1400 in 2008 for the British Heart Foundation and £800 in 2009 for the Geoff Thomas Foundation) through my running. Dionne has never raised any money through her running before, but has decided to do so this year.
Dionne is a senior midwife at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath, Sussex. Remarkably, she manages to juggle this most demanding of jobs with being a single mother of two boys (aged 14 and 10), as well as putting in all the training that she does (both with me and on her own) in preparation for her races.
I find it hard to comprehend some of the things that she has to face in her job on a day-to-day basis. The pressure to assimilate situations, process information from many sources and then make life or death clinical decisions on the spot is something that I will never have to do. Some days she is both mentally and physically drained, particularly after working consecutive night shifts. She never shirks anything with her role, and often is the 'go to' person when events have not turned out with a positive outcome. Despite this, she is a remarkably strong person and try’s to maintain a happy outlook on life - and running is one of the main things that allow her to release the stresses of the job.
As with many NHS units throughout the UK, there is never enough money for all the equipment, big and small, that is required to ensure that, in the Maternity Units case, mother and baby get the best possible care.
Dionne has decided that she will use her running to raise funds for the Maternity Unit where she works. To do this, she is running two marathons in five weeks - the inaugural Brighton marathon on 18th April and then the Edinburgh Marathon on 23rd May.
To sponsor Dionne please visit her JustGiving page on www.justgiving.com/DionneMason2010
