Ever been out on a run and suddenly had to stop because of pain just below
your ribs? If the answer is yes then you’ve probably experienced a stitch.
Unfortunately stitch is a common problem for long distance runners, especially
marathon runners!
It is commonly caused by eating
and
drinking a bit too much a bit too close to the start of the race. Thankfully
it’s in your power to prevent a stitch from occurring. If you’re tempted to
stuff your face & drink as much as possible the morning of the race,
DON’T! Eating too much on the morning of the race will only make you feel
heavy and sluggish. Use the few days before the race to ensure you’re well fed
and fully hydrated, then on the morning of the race just have a light
breakfast.
You do need to take on water and energy during the run but
don’t rush it. Drinking a litre of water within the first mile will inevitably
result in a stitch. Instead take small sips of drink, and little bites of food,
at regular intervals.
If you do get a stitch during the race, try running
bent forward for a while, breathing out forcefully as the foot on the same side
as the stitch hits the ground. If this doesn’t work you may have to take a short
walking break and gently stretch the area. Don’t worry, a stitch doesn’t usually
last for long, but it’s still best not to get one in the first place!

Since I ran the Cardiff half marathon in 2006, I had more or less stopped
running altogether. I struggled for motivation to put on my running sho
es and get
out the house for a jog; to me, there seemed little point. It was then that I
realised I had to set myself a goal that would give me a fresh attitude. That
was in November 2009 when I decided to sign up for the 2010 Edinburgh
Marathon.
As a trustee for the Nansato Nursery Trust, founded by my friends Stuart and
Paula Glegg, it was easy to choose which charity to run for. I know at firsthand
how carefully the charity spends every penny it is given and how successful it
has been in providing for the children of Malawi. Since it was founded in 2006,
the Nansato Nursery Trust has built four nurseries, which are operating
successfully. The charity now employs ten Malawian staff and every year, over
300 pre-school children are educated and fed at the nurseries.
People
from my hometown of Banchory have been very supportive in helping my fundraising
effort. My target was to raise £1,500 but so far, £2,050 has been donated.
Pupils and staff at the school I teach at have also been quick to share words of
encouragement with me, which have meant a lot.
This will be my first marathon, and I have set a target of completing the course in under four hours. However, with the wintery weather in Aberdeenshire, where I stay, training for the big day on May 23rd has proven difficult. Now that the snow has finally cleared, I can train without the fear of slipping and breaking my neck!
If you are willing to donate even a couple of pounds, your money will go a long way to making a difference for children in Malawi. To do so, please visit www.justgiving.com/jamestulloch.
