TRAINING PROGRAMMES
TRAINING TIPS (TAPERING)
With just three weeks to go to the marathon you should have
most of your hard training done at this stage. Increasing your mileage
between now and the marathon will do you more harm than good.
Many of you will want to train right up to marathon day but this will
prove to be counter productive. Your body needs to recover after all
the long mileage.
While tapering you also need to reduce your calorie intake by
about 100 calories for every mile you deduct from your taper.
At this stage you should actually start reducing your weekly
mileage - it is recommended that you reduce your total weekly mileage
by 20% or 30% two weeks before the marathon and 50% on the final
week. Avoid the urge to run too fast during the tapering
period - is actually a good time to practice your marathon pace, but
over much shorter periods. On the day and days before the
marathon you should get as much rest as possible.
During the last few days you may have nervous energy and feel
excited - this is totally natural. You may want to run on the day
before the marathon to reduce loosen up and reduce nervousness but it
would be well advised to rest or just do a few easy miles.
Follow this advice and you will arrive on the marathon start line
feeling rested and ready to go.

DOREEN'S STORY
My name is Doree n Astley and I have been a
member of PAGES
since my son, Andrew was diagnosed with autism 5 years
ago. The group provided a lot of support for our
family and gave us the opportunity to meet other families in similar
situations.
PAGES was set up to meet the needs of children and young
people with special needs in and around Ellon. It aims to provide
social opportunities for children and young people who find it
difficult to access mainstream activities.
On May 23rd, I am running the Edinburgh Marathon and, through
sponsorship, I am hoping to raise funds for PAGES. Any money
raised will go towards buying play equipment for Pages Youth Club which
meets fortnightly in Esslemont School.
If you would like to sponsor me please go to justgiving.com/doreenastley
Thank you
