TRAINING PROGRAMMES
TRAINING TIPS (PREPERATION)
Race day is approaching rapidly so you need to have a checklist of things to think of and take with you on the day:
Don't go too fast in the first few miles (you will be tempted as its mostly downhill), it is far better to be slightly slower in the early stages than to be in front of your target plan. Lucozade Sport have pace bands that can help you keep an even pace.
- Baggage buses close at 7:45am for the Scottish Half Marathon and 9:35am for the full Marathon. Place your bag early. Kit - prepare your race day kit in advance, never wear new kit or shoes on the day, it may look good, but if you get blisters it will hurt a lot in the latter stages. Pack a large black garbage bag to wear in the timing pens it will keep you warm and dry.
- Eat well, plenty of carbohydrates in the last 3 days and drink lots of water, have a good carbo meal early on Saturday evening and just a light breakfast 2/3 hours before the start.
- Get to the start nice and early. Use the toilets early and avoid an unpleasant delay. Be in your timing pin for 7:45am for the Half Marathon and 9:35am for the full Marathon.
- Drink a little at each Strathmore Water/Lucozade Sport drink station.
- Warm up lightly; jog for 15 mins or so to get your muscles warmed up.
- When you start to get tired focus on the reason for doing this and think of the money you will have raised - enjoy the crowd and soon you'll see that finishing line!
- After the race take a carbo snack or sandwich as soon as possible it will really start to aid recovery.

26.2 MILE AYE RUNNERS READY FOR THEIR EIGHTH RACE!!
In last year's marathon, 55 people formed an elite band of those who had run every one of the seven marathons, since the latest series of Edinburgh marathons started in 2003. The 26.2 Mile Aye Club consists of these runners. "We're hoping that everyone that completed last year's marathon will complete their eighth on May 23rd" says their President, Robert Cole, who will be running his 10th marathon. Some of the runners have been using that other significant marathon down the road in London as a warm up for this year's big event in Edinburgh, others such as Ross Laing have completed an ultra 53 mile run since he last ran in Edinburgh. The Mile Aye Club includes four sub-3 hour marathon runners. The most recent being Michael McCabe, who managed to crack the 3-hours for the first time at the 21st attempt in London. Michael told us: "At 56 I thought I had left it too late in life, so the sight of 2:58:55 on the clock gave me a real thrill. Even more extraordinary was being refused entry to a "runners only" charity reception afterwards because "I did not look as if I had run a marathon".

THE GSi TEAM WOULD LIKE TO WISH ALL RUNNERS THE BEST OFF LUCK FOR SUNDAY 23RD OF MAY AND WE WILL SEE YOU AT THE FINISH LINE!!!
